Ulrich Leister

Ulrich Leister obtained a Master of Science in transportation engineering from the Institute of Technology Berlin (Germany). Ulrich started to get involved with California’s transportation system in 2010 when he wrote a thesis that analyzed the opportunities of integrating California’s High-Speed Rail system with the existing rail infrastructure. After his studies, Ulrich joined SMA, a European rail consulting firm, in Zurich (Switzerland). The projects he worked on allowed him to expand his expertise in both European and American railroading and in 2014 he came to the U.S. to lead SMA’s US-subsidiary in Santa Ana, California. Together with his team, he supported the development of the 2018 California State Rail Plan’s network vision, the implementation of improved timetables for southern California’s regional and intercity rail systems and Chicago’s Metra BNSF service, and the planning efforts around blended operations on the San Francisco Peninsula.
